Figurative Journey: Kuff-Demicco & Bernstein

Date:
10/27/2017 - 3:00pm - 6:00pm
Location:
Cooperative Gallery 213 State St Binghamton

Figurative Journey,  the upcoming October show at the Cooperative Gallery 213  features sculptural works by Karen Kuff-Demicco and Barbara Bernstein that show their continuing exploration of  the human form, emotions, and life's experiences. The exhibition will begin with an Artists’ Opening at the Cooperative Gallery on October 5th, from 6-8PM.  First Friday hours are 6-9PM on the following evening, October 6th.  There will be a Third Thursday interactive event on October 19th, again at the Cooperative Gallery, that will focus on the body and emotions: details later.  The show will close October 28th at 4PM.

The title Figurative Journey fits the works well as “figurative” can refer to either a figure itself or to a metaphor using the figure.  The pursuit of either meaning involves a challenging and intriguing journey. Karen Kuff-Demicco works with clay and mixed media, often using found objects for inspiration.  In her work she is drawn towards creating narratives with the human figure, faces, or other creatures that stand in for humanity.  During this past year she set herself a goal of “gathering her wits” through the use of materials collected in her studio.  A number of these works will be on display.

Barbara Bernstein's work deals primarily with the female body. "As well as using the body as a metaphor, I abstract the figure, often exaggerating one part or another to suggest other objects or an emotion.  Some of the pieces in this show were sculpted during a long illness and reflect that emotional time in my life."

Barbara casts her sculptures in glass. "Glass shines, reflects and glows, suggesting the way we project our emotions and feelings, creating an aura of color around ourselves." She also fuses glass, creating faces that play with color. She likes to work on a face until it stares back at her and says hello.

The Cooperative Gallery 213 is located on State of the Art, 213 State St., BInghamton NY.  Regular Gallery hours are 3-6PM on Fridays and 12-4PM on Saturdays. For more information go to: www.cooperativegallery.com
