Figures Wrapped in Patterns /Textures Trapped by Photos

Date:
05/25/2018 - 3:00pm - 6:00pm
Location:
Cooperative Gallery 213 State St Binghamton

Painting by Ken Weir

This First Friday May 4th, the Cooperative Gallery 213 will open an exhibit, “Figures Wrapped in Patterns?Textures Trapped by Photos” with painter Ken Weir and photographer W Gregg Harris.

The exhibit, which will run through May 26th  pairs figure paintings with photographs that layer texture and figures. A  Reception, open to the public, will be held at the gallery on Saturday May 12th 4- 7 pm. A Third Thursday Discussion, led by Ken Weir May 17th at 7 pm will explore Painting from Life Versus Painting from a Photograph.

The two artists are friends from high school who have influenced each others’ work. Harris studied sculpture at Alfred University and Architecture at University of Buffalo. He has moved from sculpture to investigating the world through a camera lens. “In an age when everyone is taking thousands of pictures, the challenge to making photographs is recognizing and focusing the moment into something fresh,” states Harris. “I make obvious images that aren’t noticed at first that are so striking, it’s a mystery how they’ve been missed.”

In Weir's paintings the figures portray a pregnant moment, an awareness of things within and outside the painting. In the current exhibit the figures inhabit a world of patterns. According to Weir, “Patterns allow me to be free and inventive with colors and shapes that already have been beautifully created on fabrics, wallpapers and even in nature. It's a way to be abstract within a realistic world.”

The Cooperative Gallery, a popular stop on the First Friday Art Walk, located at Artists Row --State of the Art, at 213 State Street in Binghamton, is open on First Friday 3- 9 pm and regularly Fridays from 3-6 and Saturdays from 12- 4 pm.  A free weekly e-newsletter is available by signing up at  www.cooperativegallery.com or on Facebook  at Cooperative Gallery 213.
