4th BOB JOHNSTON MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW AND COMPETITION

The Cooperative Gallery 213 and the Two Rivers Photography Club are sponsoring the 4th Bob Johnston Photography Show and Competition January 2-31st, 2015. “This is an especially strong and exciting photography show at the Cooperative Gallery,” according to Peg Johnston. “It displays the talent of the many great photographers we have in this area and demonstrates photography as art.” Photographs were judged by local professional photographer, J.W. Johnston (no relation to Bob Johnston) and awarded at the First Friday Art Walk.
Best in Show was awarded to Mike Ricciardi‘s “Toast “, a playful but complex photo of toast flying in a diner, with allusions to Norman Rockwell. Four Judge’s Choice prizes were awarded, two in Black and White and two in Color. In the Black and White category “Aunt Sarah’s Fall” by Larry Lefferts and “Jeanine” by D.M. Griffin won. In Color, “Pretty in Pink” by Jean Stout and “Lady Calla” by Carol Saggese captured the Judge’s Choice.
Ten Honorable Mentions were also given: “Aconitum Monkshood” by Susan C. Larkin , “Chinese Laundry” by Greg Chianis, “Douglas Falls” by Cindy Ruggieri, “Gotcha” by Fred Schum, “Delicate Bud” by Sandra Kirker, “Date Night”: by Brett Martin, “Zippity Do Dah” by Hobit Lafaye, “Locomotion” by Bill Bay, “Life/Death” by Richard Ley, “Next Generation” by Carol Saggese.
The Competition is named for Bob Johnston, a lifelong photographer and Cooperative Gallery member who died in 2010. “Bob Johnston was an ‘Ansell Adams’ kind of photographer who worked mostly in black and white film and favored both urban and natural landscapes,” said Bill Gorman, also a photographer, and member of the Cooperative Gallery. Johnston’s work was also featured in his daughter Peg’s recent “Binghamton: a Photographic Memoir.” This fourth Exhibit is a tribute to his passion for photography. Bob Johnston defined a good photo this way: “For me, the successful photograph is one in which both the abstract elements and the subject matter of the image reinforce each other to provide an emotional experience for the viewer.”

The Cooperative Gallery 213 State St. Binghamton is regularly open Fridays 3-9 pm and Saturdays 12-4 pm or by appointment.
