| BINGHAMTON, NY – In conjunction with the current exhibition “not but nothing other: African-American Portrayals, 1930s to Today” at the Binghamton University Art Museum, two public events will be presented.
A public conversation with Ruben Santiago-Hudson ’78 will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Watters Theater in the Fine Arts Building. The conversation will address African-American portrayals in the arts and popular culture with celebrated actor, writer, director and Binghamton University alumnus Santiago-Hudson, led by local resident Sharon Ball. Ball retired as director of the Broome County Arts Council in Binghamton and worked as an award-winning senior editor with NPR News in Washington, D.C. Opportunity for questions from the floor will be provided. The conversation is sponsored by the Harpur College Dean’s Office and supported by the Latin American Student Union.
Three days later, a lecture and community sing titled “singing Who We Are” with Ysaye Maria Barnwell will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, also in the Watters Theater. Ysaye Barnwell, a master teacher, composer, actress, producer, author and former member of the all-female, African-American a cappella ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock®, will present a short lecture on African-American song forms and lead the audience in a community sing.
