February First Friday

BINGHAMTON, NY. Broome County Arts Council (BCAC) is pleased to present February’s First Friday Art Walk on February 7th, 2025, from 6-9 pm, with some locations having varying hours (details below). Rack cards are available at participating locations. Most exhibitions are free and open to the public.

New this month: RE/Collected Art Sale at BCAC’s Artist in Residence studio. Join us for a week-long Art Sale with affordable prices ranging from $3 to $50, kicking off on February’s First Friday.  The sale features unused artworks donated by the community, ready to be repurposed by new owners, in a variety of mediums and styles, including drawings, paintings, photographs, ceramics, posters, and home decor pieces. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Artist-in-Residence program, helping to sustain and cultivate local talent.

This month’s First Friday participating open galleries and creative spaces include 12 locations, including one pop-up venue:

  • Pop Up Venue! Parable of the Talents at Praxis. Praxis is a gallery focused on emerging and experimental artists. This month hosts art by Melissa Schmitz, Abigail Cornelia, and Nivole Paolillo, with a live performance by Sharon Ball at 8PM.
  • The Artisan Gallery: Fables of Reconstruction. Erik Lasky. From Lasky: “I view my paintings as narrative. I think of my pictures as dreams or links between reality and the subconscious. I use allegorical representations to explore aspects of the human condition. By using a limited palette I create a strong tonal harmony and a sense of space, atmosphere and mood in my pictures. I explore themes of isolation, nature, cycles, rebirth and death in my paintings. I often use disfigurements, amputations for example, as a physical manifestation of an inner turmoil; A sense of incompleteness or illness. Beyond the image itself, I want the paint to tell the technical narrative of my work. You will see it thick and thin, dissolved and sanded, my fingerprints, my dog’s hair and the creative motion of composing a picture rather than copying one.” (6pm-9pm)
  • Artful Child Gallery: Untitled. Gatlin Bartholomay. (6pm-9pm)
  • BCAC’s Artist in Residence Studio: RE/Collected Art Sale. (6-9pm)
  • The Bundy – 3rd Floor Gallery: Where are we going & why am I in this basket? AmarA*jk. (6pm-9pm).
  • Binghamton Photo: Expired II. Eric Yetter. From Yetter: “This show largely uses images shot on expired film.  I may purchase a box lot at an auction that includes a camera and film or expired film in a junk shop or thrift store.  To work with expired film, I need to let go of my expectations of what I will see once my film is developed.  I may get color changes or graininess or, all too often, nothing at all.  I have come to embrace this loss of control and expectation.  I am reminded that I am not in charge of how things will turn out.  I take shots of things that strike me; I get to enjoy that instant and then see later if it has been captured for you to enjoy or if I just get to keep it for myself.  There can be joy in an empty roll, too.  Please enjoy these moments that made it.” (6pm-9pm).
  • The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier: Brick by Brick: Lego Magic Creations. D. Select lego enthusiasts from the community.
