Advocates Call for Action to Protect Vulnerable Residents from Unjust Evictions and for Mayor Kraham’s policies to address, not exacerbate, the local housing crisis.
(Binghamton, NY) – Today, Citizen Action of New York joined Council President Michael Dundon for a rally in solidarity with the disabled veteran facing an unjust eviction due to the Mayor’s Office’s mishandling of City-acquired properties.
“Instead of displacing people and knocking buildings down, there needs to be a viable plan to create affordable housing,” said Council President Dundon.
City Council Member Rebecca Rathmell added: “Demolition is not a development strategy, and displacement is not a solution.”
“Good Cause Eviction is about more than housing,” said Citizen Action Southern Tier Community Organizer Salka Valerio. “It’s about protecting dignity, stability, and the right to call a place home.”
Advocates called attention to the urgent need for good cause eviction protections, which would provide critical stability for Binghamton’s most vulnerable residents, including disabled individuals and veterans, and help prevent displacement and homelessness in our community.
Councilmember Hotchkiss has proposed Good Cause Eviction legislation, which will be the subject of the Binghamton City Council’s scheduled town hall meeting on Monday, January 13, 2025.
