“The War Prayer” on Memorial Day
May 27, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Memorial Day will soon be upon us, a day once called Decoration Day with flowers to be lain on graves with special attention to all military veterans.
In celebration of this event, Veterans for Peace of Broome County will have a dramatic reading of Mark Twain’s “The War Prayer” followed by an open discussion on war at Mark Twain’s grave in Woodlawn Cemetery starting at 10 AM, Monday, Memorial Day, May 27th.
14905-1624. Please park outside of Woodland Cemetery on the street. Do not drive into the Cemetery. Signs will direct to Mark Twain’s grave.
Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was a Confederate soldier for a short time until he deserted the Confederacy, went west and started his writing career.
Those in our reverent gathering will be offered a flower to lay on random Union & Confederate prisoners graves just a short walk from Mark Twain’s gravesite. Thousands of Confederate soldiers died in the Elmira POW camp from the summer of 1864 to the late spring of 1865.
