TRASH! A Collaborative ECO Art Exhibit

The Cooperative Gallery 213 is sponsoring the first Environmental Art exhibit June 2-25, 2016, titled TRASH! A Collaborative EcoArt curated by Peg Johnston. It opens Thursday June 2nd from 6-8 pm and First Friday from 3 pm to 9 pm. Many of the artists will talk about their art and working with specific materials on Third Thursday June 16th at 7 pm. All events are free and open to the public.

"This exhibit is filled with amazing art made from all kinds of materials from paper to plastics, fabric to scrap metal, styrofoam to recycled wood,” says Peg Johnston, an artist at the Cooperative Gallery in Binghamton NY. “I am fascinated with materials that most would call waste and creating art from them.” Beyond use of non-traditional art materials, works in this show will bring attention to the plight of our environment and our role in both creating and remediating environmental destruction.

Another event associated with the TRASH! exhibit is a free Writing Workshop and Reading by Andrei Guruianu, former Broome County Poet Laureate, on Saturday June 25th from 1-4 pm. Guruianu  has recently published a new book, Dead Reckoning, Transatlantic Passages on Europe and America. His workshop will include collaging and writing from that art, and readings at the end. It is funded by Poets and Writers, a national organization devoted to offering encouragement and support for emerging writers.

The Cooperative Gallery, a popular stop on the First Friday Art Walk, located at 213 State Street in Binghamton, is open on Frist Friday 3- 9 pm and regularly Fridays from 3-6 and Saturdays from 12- 4 pm and also by appointment. Light Painting Live: Stephen Schweitzer

Light Painting Performance Opens Gallery’s Fifth Weekend Series

Stephen Schweitzer will present a light painting exhibit on Saturday May 30th, 2015 at 8 pm at the Cooperative Gallery 213 State St. The event is free and open to the public although donations for the artist will be welcomed.

“Live light painting is an immediate and collaborative process not unlike a traditional painting where each light image is added over time to create a final piece,” according to Schweitzer who has been experimenting with the art form for several years. The audience can see the painting with the aid of a high powered HD projector in real time. Lucem Picturae is Schweitzer’s project and in this performance he is presenting experimental techniques using dance, music, and new computer technology. A sample of his work can be accessed here.

Also on display will be Select Murals from Mural Fest 2015, which represent some illustrious international artists including Damien Mitchell of Australia, Nic707 of NYC, and the Indigo Arts Collective of Brooklyn. These murals are available for property owners who have a boarded up building in one of Binghamton’s neighborhoods under the Dept. of Public Art’s blight mitigation art project funded by Chenango Co Arts Council and the Hoyt Foundation. “The goal is to use abandoned buildings as a canvas for art which will draw attention to their potential and will brighten up neighborhoods with boarded up properties, explained Peg Johnston of the DPA. The murals can be viewed Friday May 29th from 3-6 pm and Saturday 12-4 pm at the Cooperative Gallery 213 State St. Binghamton. Interested property owners should contact binghamtonbridge@gmail.com for more information.

The Cooperative Gallery is utilizing the occasional “Fifth Weekend” in the gallery schedule to showcase innovative or special weekend only shows. Previously the gallery used the Fifth Weekend for the Marche’ Art Sale and to make needed renovations and repairs. “This is an effort to bring in new energy and explore artistic ideas in our community,” commented Kit Ashman vice president of the Cooperative Gallery. Future ideas are a posthumous exhibit of Ruth Harasta’s art, a dance performance, and light painting workshops. For more information see gallery’s Facebook page, website www.cooperativegallery.com, or call 724-3462.

Photo Competition Draws Nearly 100 Images

The Cooperative Gallery 213 and the Two Rivers Photography Club are sponsoring the 4th Bob Johnston Photography Show and Competition January 2-31st, 2015. “This is one of our most popular shows at the Cooperative Gallery,” according to Peg Johnston. “It speaks to how many great photographers we have in this area and their desire to share their art. Although the show is open to all regional photographers, joining with the photography club guarantees that we have beautifully executed photographs that this year range from stunning landscape and floral photographs to striking digitally created abstracts to a humorous staged photograph ala Cindy Sherman."  Photographs will be judged by a local professional photographer. Prizes and cash awards for the winners will be announced at First Friday, January 2nd at 7 pm at a reception for the artists open to the public.

The Competition is named for Bob Johnston, a lifelong photographer and gallery member who died in 2010. “Bob Johnston was an ‘Ansel Adams’ kind of photographer who worked mostly in black and white film and favored both urban and natural landscapes,” said Bill Gorman, also a photographer and member of the Cooperative Gallery. Johnston’s work was also featured in his daughter Peg’s recent “Binghamton: a Photographic Memoir.”

This fourth Exhibit, which will feature 98 images from 50 area photographers, is a tribute to his photography. Bob Johnston defined a good photo this way: “For me, the successful photograph is one in which both the abstract elements and the subject matter of the image reinforce each other to provide an emotional experience for the viewer.” The Cooperative Gallery 213, located on State of the Art, 213 State Street, Binghamton NY. is regularly open Fridays 3-6 pm and Saturdays 12-4 pm
