Joanne Thorne Arnold and John Thomson both have installations in the month of February at the Cooperative Gallery opening Jan. 31st and running through February 23rd. Arnold’s “Into The Presence” includes new paintings and 3-D work. Thomson’s “Three Minimal Cruising Boats” features a hand crafted canoe as well as drawings and plans. An Artist’s reception opens the show on Thursday Jan. 31 from 6-8 with brief artists talks. The Cooperative Gallery located at 213 State St. Binghamton is open First Friday 3- 9 pm, and regularly on Fridays 3-6 pm and Saturdays 12-4 pm.
The nature that surrounds us is the theme for the installation, Into the Presence by Joanne Thorne Arnold. Attending art camp in the summer of 2018 catapulted her play into other mediums including a whimsical approach with paper mache’ and wire sculpture. The wildlife depicted includes the animals that are seen on her daily walks around Cutler Pond. Says Thorne-Arnold, “It’s a place and time when I can clear my mind from the noise of the day. The Wendell Berry poem, The Peace of Wild Things is the inspiration for the entire exhibit.”
John Thomson is a Professor of Art at Binghamton University with a lifelong passion for building models, musical instruments, and functional and abstract 3-D figures. For “Three Minimal Cruising Boats” he will install a 10 foot canoe among other art works. Thomson comments, “I’ve been building and selling plans and patterns for these sailboats for years. I still have trouble convincing people that a two person, sleep-aboard sailboat that one person can put on a car, is possible.”
