Chuck Haupt, a photographer, offers “Voices: The Daughters of Uganda” taken during a visit in 2019. Alla Boldina, an abstract artist, explores “Silences: The Pauses In Between” in her exhibit. Both will talk about their work on a virtual Art Talk via Zoom Third Thursday April 15th 7- 8 pm.

Uganda, a developing nation with a history of humanitarian abuses. The traditional gender roles of women in Uganda are often seen as subordinate to those of men. Illiteracy is directly linked to an increase in domestic violence, along with sexual assault. Opportunities for women and girls to succeed and thrive as leaders in their communities lie in education. Haupt explains, “I was able to visit faith-based schools where students, both male and female, were thriving in their studies and in their hopes for the future. The students are encouraged to see themselves as potential leaders of their nation, helping to lift it out of poverty and instability.” This exhibit, the Daughters of Uganda, portrays their hopes and dreams to do just that.

Boldina talks about her show: “In this exhibit, I explore the philosophical absence — the pauses, the stops, the breaths in between the cerebral and the verbal.  My abstract paintings attempt to catch that space in between. The concept of silence, to me, suggests a moment of stillness, a necessary pause to rethink or to reevaluate but also to simply feel and experience, without thinking. Silence allows us the moment to pause before assuming, before judging, before accusing. Silences, the pauses in-between, allow renewal.”   More info. ecard_both2021
